The Training weekend

Our pre-expedition training is designed to equip you with essential skills like navigation, campcraft, and first aid, but it’s also an opportunity to form bonds with your team, building camaraderie that will enhance your expedition. You’ll have the freedom to switch to a different group if you feel the match isn’t quite right, giving you total confidence that when you set out on your journey, you’ll be surrounded by like-minded individuals ready to share in the adventure of a lifetime.

It’s not just about the destination—it’s about the experience, the people, and the unforgettable moments you create together. At Crux Expeditions, we prioritise group dynamics and skill-building, ensuring that every adventurer feels empowered, prepared, and part of a team that will become lifelong friends.

Why the Training Weekend Matters

The training weekend gives you the chance to meet your fellow adventurers and leader in person, allowing you to get a feel for the group and see if the team dynamic is the right fit. We believe that the people you travel with are as important as the destination, and this weekend allows you to gauge whether this is the team you want to share your experience with.

By offering you the chance to meet first, you can make an informed decision on whether to proceed with the expedition or try a different group, ensuring that you embark on the adventure with confidence and excitement.

What to Expect

The training weekend is designed to be both relaxed and informative, striking the perfect balance between socialising and learning essential skills. Here’s what you’ll be doing:

  1. A Weekend in the Lake District
You’ll spend two days in the beautiful Lake District, staying at either a hostel or campsite, surrounded by some of the UK’s most picturesque scenery. The relaxed environment allows you to unwind, soak up nature, and connect with your team.

  2. Hiking and Expedition Skills
During the weekend, we’ll take you on hikes that mimic the terrain and conditions of your upcoming expedition. Along the way, you’ll learn and practise essential expedition skills, including:

    • Navigation: Master the use of maps, compasses, and GPS devices to ensure you can find your way in any environment.

    • Campcraft: Learn how to set up and manage camp in the wild, from pitching tents to cooking in remote areas.

    • Basic First Aid: Equip yourself with essential first aid skills to handle common expedition injuries or emergencies.

    • Survival Techniques: Get hands-on experience in wilderness survival, learning techniques that could be vital during your expedition.

  3. Scenario-Based Learning
We’ll run through real-life scenarios that you might face during your expedition. This hands-on approach helps you feel more prepared for whatever challenges come your way, and it encourages problem-solving as a group, which strengthens the team bond.

  4. Learning About Your Destination
Throughout the weekend, we’ll share detailed insights about the environment, culture, and unique challenges of the destination you’re heading to. Whether you’re venturing into the jungle, crossing deserts, or trekking remote mountain ranges, understanding your surroundings will be key to your success.

Team Bonding, Without the Pressure

While the weekend focuses on preparation, it’s also designed to be laid-back and social—without forcing anyone to be "on" all the time. We know that everyone has different levels of social energy, and the training weekend allows you to bond with your team in a natural, comfortable way. There’s no pressure to be social 24/7; you’ll have time to step back, recharge, and reflect as needed.

This weekend gives you a true snapshot of what life will be like on expedition, living in close quarters and working as a team. It’s as much about building relationships as it is about learning the practicalities of expedition life.

The Next Step

At the end of the weekend, you’ll have a clear sense of whether the team dynamic feels right for you. If you’re happy with the group, the cost of the training weekend will be subtracted from the total expedition price, so you can move forward with confidence.

But if you feel the group isn’t the right match, that’s okay too. You’ll be invited to join the next training weekend and meet a new group, giving you another opportunity to find the perfect fit before your journey begins.
