Why This Course?
Leading an expedition is one of the toughest, most rewarding jobs in the world. You’re not just a guide, you’re the decision-maker, the problem-solver, and the safeguard between your team and the unknown.
That requires more than just technical skills. You need the confidence to handle emergencies, the judgement to make tough calls, and the resilience to manage people and logistics in challenging, remote environments.
The Crux Expedition Leader Course is designed to give you all of that. Over 5 packed days, you’ll face real-world scenarios, sharpen your leadership toolkit, and push yourself in the field. At the end, you’ll be assessed. Pass, and you’ll earn the Crux Leader Patch and Certificate — proof that you’re ready to lead with Crux Expeditions and a credential respected across the industry.
What You'll MAster
This isn’t classroom theory — it’s a full-spectrum leadership course designed to push you, test you, and prepare you for the realities of leading expeditions in remote environments. Over 5 days, you’ll build the skills that make the difference between a good trip and a safe, successful expedition.
You’ll cover:
-
Emergency Scenarios – Missing team members, injuries on the trail, evacuations, and crisis response — handled in live, scenario-based training.
-
Field Communications – Radios, satellite phones, signal procedures, and keeping teams connected when there’s no signal.
-
Expedition Logistics – Budgets, kit lists, food and ration planning, transport, permits, border crossings, and international coordination.
-
Expedition First Aid – Practical skills for immediate response to injuries and illnesses in the field, plus how to improvise when far from help.
-
Risk Assessment in Action – How to write effective risk assessments, then adapt them dynamically as conditions change.
-
Survival Skills – Shelter building, fire lighting, water sourcing and purification, navigation without a compass, and staying safe in extreme weather.
-
Leadership Under Pressure – Communication, motivation, conflict resolution, and rotating “Leader of the Day” responsibilities in real expedition conditions.
-
Common Expedition Issues – Lost baggage, delayed transport, altitude sickness, poor morale, kit failures — and how to turn setbacks into solutions.
-
Navigation Mastery – Advanced map reading, compass work, pacing, timing, route choice, and leading confidently in poor visibility.
-
Campcraft & Expedition Cooking – Building efficient camps, cooking for groups on limited fuel, and managing hygiene in challenging environments.
-
Cultural Awareness & Group Management Abroad – Respecting local cultures, leading with sensitivity, and keeping harmony within diverse teams.
-
Mental Resilience – How to stay calm, focused, and decisive under pressure — and how to inspire the same in your team.
You won’t just learn these skills — you’ll use them in the hills, under pressure, in realistic scenarios. By the time you leave, you’ll have proven your ability to think fast, act smart, and lead with confidence.

Tested in the Field – No classrooms. You’ll learn and lead in the hills, facing live scenarios and real decisions.
Small Group Coaching – Max 8 participants for personal instruction, feedback, and tailored development.

Prepared for Emergencies – From satellite comms to first aid, you’ll train for situations where lives depend on your actions.
Complete Expedition Training – Leadership, logistics, survival, planning, and problem-solving — all in one course.
Pass or Fail – Earn Your Patch
This isn’t a box-ticking certificate. It’s an in-house leadership assessment that measures your ability to handle real expedition challenges.
✅ Pass – You’ll earn the Crux Leader Patch and Certificate, proving you’ve met our in-house standard for leadership. It shows you’re eligible to lead for Crux Expeditions and demonstrates to others in the industry that you’ve been tested in the field.
❌ Not yet – While the course isn’t designed to fail people, leadership is about accountability. If you haven’t yet demonstrated the standard, you’ll leave with detailed feedback, expert guidance, and a clear pathway to success. With further practice, many return, re-train, and pass.
The course is built to help you succeed. With expert instruction, small group coaching (maximum 8 participants), and scenario-based training, anyone who applies themselves fully should pass. The assessment adds credibility, but the teaching and support are there to get you over the line.

FAQ's
Do I need qualifications already?
No. You don’t need to hold qualifications like ML or Outdoor First Aid to take part or to pass the course. What you do need is extensive outdoor experience — you should already be confident with multi-day hiking, wild camping, and looking after yourself in remote conditions. The course builds on this foundation and pushes you into leadership territory.
What qualifications do I need to lead for Crux afterwards?
To lead an expedition for Crux, you’ll need to hold the Mountain Leader (ML) qualification and at least an 18-hour Outdoor First Aid certificate. The Expedition Leader Course provides the leadership and expedition-specific training, while ML and First Aid ensure you meet industry-standard technical and safety requirements.
Is the Crux Leader Certificate recognised?
The Crux Leader Patch and Certificate is our in-house standard, a credential that shows you’ve been tested and proven capable under real expedition conditions. It’s what we look for when selecting leaders for Crux Expeditions, and it demonstrates to other organisations that you’ve undergone targeted training in expedition leadership. While it’s not an externally accredited qualification, it is a respected endorsement within the expedition community and carries real weight when applying for leadership roles.
What if I don’t pass?
This course is designed to help people succeed. With expert instruction, personal coaching, and practical scenarios, anyone who applies themselves has a strong chance of passing. If for any reason you’re not yet at the required standard, you’ll leave with clear feedback and a development plan — and you’re welcome to return to complete the assessment in the future.
Will this help me get expedition work?
Yes. The course is designed as a massive stepping stone into the expedition industry. Passing makes you eligible to lead with Crux Expeditions, and the skills you’ll develop are exactly what companies are looking for: risk management, logistics, crisis handling, and people leadership. Even if you don’t immediately go on to work with us, the certificate demonstrates to other expedition providers that you’ve been tested in the field and know what leadership demands.
What kit do I need?
You’ll need to bring your own personal outdoor kit — hiking boots, rucksack, sleeping bag, sleeping mat, tent, and camping essentials. Think of the gear you’d normally take for a multi-day wild camp in the UK. We’ll provide the specialist and technical kit you need for the course, such as radios, satellite comms, group shelters, and emergency equipment. If you’re unsure about any item on the kit list, we’ll help you prepare before the course so you arrive ready to go.
