What to Know Before You Enquire

Crux Expeditions designs and delivers bespoke and carefully curated expeditions in remote environments around the world.
This page exists to clarify how things work, set expectations early, and ensure conversations start from the right place.

If anything here raises questions, the next step is always a conversation.

About Crux Expeditions

Crux Expeditions is the expedition travel brand of Crux Outdoors Ltd, a UK registered company. We design and operate private, small group and corporate expeditions globally, working with long standing local partners and experienced expedition leaders.

Our work spans mountain, jungle, desert, polar and remote wilderness environments. Every expedition is designed deliberately, led professionally, and delivered with care for people and places.

Who Our Expeditions Are For

Crux expeditions are designed for people who value judgement, preparation and thoughtful leadership over speed, scale or cost cutting.

Some clients arrive with significant experience. Others are taking on their first major expedition. What matters is not experience alone, but mindset. We work best with people who understand that meaningful journeys require flexibility, patience and trust in the process.

If you are looking for a fixed itinerary holiday or a race to tick off a summit as quickly as possible, we are unlikely to be the right fit.

Location and Nationality

Crux Expeditions is UK based, but our clients are international.

You do not need to be based in the UK to join an expedition. Many participants travel from Europe, North America, the Middle East and beyond. International flights are not included unless explicitly stated, allowing clients to travel from their preferred location.

All pre expedition communication, preparation and documentation is handled remotely unless a UK based training weekend or briefing is part of the expedition design.

Booking and Payments

Booking an expedition with Crux is deliberately straightforward.

Once your expedition has been designed and the scope agreed, we confirm availability, costs, and timelines privately. There are no public booking calendars or published departure dates, because every expedition is planned around the people taking part.

To secure an expedition, we require a deposit once the design is agreed. The remaining balance is then paid in stages, aligned with the planning and delivery process. Payment schedules are clear, agreed in advance, and outlined in writing.

All client funds are held in accordance with UK travel regulations, and financial protection is in place where applicable. Transparency matters. You will always know what you are paying for, when payments are due, and how your money is handled.

If plans need to change, we deal with that directly and honestly. No hidden clauses. No fine print surprises.

Group Types and Private Expeditions

Most Crux expeditions are small group or private.

We design expeditions for individuals, private groups, families, corporate teams and organisations. We do not run school trips or mass participation programmes.

Charity challenges and fundraising expeditions are considered selectively and only where objectives align with our operational standards and values.

Insurance, Safety and Risk

All participants are required to hold appropriate travel and expedition insurance. This must include emergency medical treatment, evacuation and repatriation, and be valid for the altitude and activity of the expedition.

Health and safety is embedded into how Crux operates, not added afterwards. Expeditions are risk managed dynamically in the field, supported by experienced leaders, local teams and UK based operational oversight.

Detailed safety planning, medical considerations and emergency protocols are covered separately and discussed before departure.

Preparation and Training

Most expeditions do not require prior technical experience unless explicitly stated.

Preparation is tailored to the expedition and the individual. Clients receive guidance on fitness, equipment, skills and expectations well before departure.

Some expeditions include a UK based training or briefing weekend. These are designed to build confidence, share knowledge, and allow participants and leaders to meet before travelling.

Attendance is encouraged where offered, but suitability is always assessed holistically rather than by attendance alone.

Life on Expedition

Conditions on expedition vary significantly depending on location and objective.

Accommodation may range from remote camps and mountain huts to lodges or hotels in transit areas. Comfort is never the primary driver, but care is taken to balance challenge with recovery wherever possible.

Plans adapt. Weather changes. Logistics shift. Good expeditions respond intelligently rather than rigidly. Flexibility is essential.

What Is and Isn’t Included

Each expedition page clearly outlines what is included and what is not.

Typically included are leadership, in country logistics, accommodation during the expedition, local teams, permits and safety planning.

International flights, visas, personal insurance, personal equipment and discretionary spending are usually excluded unless otherwise stated.

Nothing is hidden. Nothing is assumed.

Bespoke and Custom Expeditions

Many clients come to Crux with an idea rather than a finished plan.

We design bespoke expeditions from the ground up, drawing on extensive experience and trusted networks. This may include adapting one of our signature mountain expeditions or creating something entirely new.

Bespoke does not mean unlimited. Some ideas are refined. Others are redirected. Occasionally, we say no.

That judgement is part of the service.

If Plans Change

Expeditions operate in the real world. Weather, political situations, environmental conditions and group dynamics can all affect how an expedition unfolds.

Decisions are made conservatively, with safety and long term outcomes prioritised over rigid adherence to an itinerary.

Clients are expected to trust that judgement when it matters most.

The Next Step

If what you have read here aligns with how you approach travel and challenge, the next step is a conversation.

We are happy to talk through ideas, answer questions, and explore whether Crux is the right fit before any commitment is made.

That clarity benefits everyone.
