In the months leading up to your expedition, we lay the foundations for an unforgettable adventure. From the moment you join us, you’ll be introduced to your expedition leader and provided with all the guidance and support you need to prepare for the journey ahead.

You’ll also be added to a dedicated WhatsApp group chat, allowing you to connect with your teammates, ask questions, build confidence, and start understanding how things will unfold. By the time you land in-country, you’ll already know your team, and we’ll be an expedition running with momentum.

This phase is about getting ready: from packing lists to physical training, setting the stage for a seamless and enriching expedition experience.

Day 1 – Arrival in Tanzania

Arrival in Tanzania (Moshi)

Touch down in Tanzania and feel the buzz of anticipation. One of our trusted local partners will be waiting to greet you at the airport and transfer you to our base in Moshi, a colourful gateway town nestled beneath the mountain.

There’s no formal activity today, just time to settle in, reconnect with your Crux teammates, and get a good night’s rest before the journey begins.

Day 2 – Into the Forest

Machame Gate to Machame Camp: 5–7 hrs walk

After breakfast, we drive to Machame Gate to begin our trek. The route winds through lush rainforest, dense with giant ferns, twisting vines, and the calls of exotic birds.

Expect the air to be humid and rich with life as we ascend gradually, crossing wooden bridges and muddy trails. By late afternoon, we emerge into moorland and arrive at Machame Camp, your first night under canvas beneath Kilimanjaro’s stars.

Day 3 – Rise to the Plateau

Machame Camp to Shira Camp (3,750 m): 4–6 hrs walk

Today we climb out of the forest and into open heathland. The trail steepens, winding up lava ridges and across open plateaus. As we gain height, the vegetation becomes more alien, giant groundsels and senecios dot the path like something out of a fantasy novel.

We reach Shira Camp in the afternoon, perched on a vast plateau with panoramic views of the mountain ahead and the plains below.

Day 4 – Acclimatise at Altitude

Shira Camp to Barranco Camp (3,960 m) via Lava Tower (4,640 m): 6–8 hrs walk

This is one of the most important days of the expedition, and one of the most spectacular. We ascend steadily to Lava Tower (4,640m), a towering volcanic outcrop in the alpine desert. It’s dry, stark, and surreal, and it marks your first time above 4,500m.

After lunch, we descend into the lush Barranco Valley. Towering walls and hanging glaciers surround us as we make camp beneath the infamous Barranco Wall, tomorrow morning’s challenge. This “climb high, sleep low” day is key for acclimatisation.

Day 5 – The Barranco Wall

Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp (4,035 m): 4–5 hrs walk

We kick off the day with a hands-on scramble up the Barranco Wall, an exhilarating hour of rock-hugging ledges and dramatic exposure, always safe but never dull. It’s a group highlight and a real moment of shared triumph.

The rest of the day is a steady up-and-down traverse through alpine valleys until we reach Karanga Camp. It's a shorter day, giving time to rest, hydrate, and prepare for the final push.

Day 6 – Base Camp

Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp (4,673 m): 3–4 hrs walk

We climb steadily toward our final camp: Barafu, perched high on a rocky saddle beneath the summit. The terrain is now stark and lunar, stripped of vegetation and shaped by wind.

We arrive by early afternoon to rest, eat, and prepare. Your gear is checked, your summit layers packed. After dinner, we sleep as early as possible, because the real climb begins tonight.

Day 7 – Summit Night

Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m): 11–15 hrs total

We wake just before midnight. Wrapped in layers, headlamps glowing, we begin the slow, silent ascent up the scree slopes of Kilimanjaro. It’s cold. It’s dark. And it’s one of the most powerful nights of your life.

At first light, we reach Stella Point, and moments later, we stand on the roof of Africa: Uhuru Peak, 5,895 m.

After photos and hugs at the summit, we descend to Barafu for rest, then continue down through thickening air and growing warmth to Mweka Camp, back in the forest, 2,800m below where we began.

Day 8 – Return to Moshi

Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate (1,640 m), then transfer to Moshi: 3–4 hrs walk

Our final descent takes us through misty rainforest, buzzing with insects and life. At Mweka Gate, we sign out and say heartfelt goodbyes to our porters and guides, the heroes of the mountain.

A private transfer returns us to Moshi, where hot showers and cold drinks await. That evening, we celebrate together, not just the summit, but the journey, the team, and the friendships that made it possible.

Departure Day

Depending on your flight time, there may be time for a final breakfast together before heading to Kilimanjaro International Airport.

The mountain will stay with you — in your legs, in your photos, and in the stories you’ll tell for years to come.

Climbing Kilimanjaro is a genuine physical challenge, but one that’s well within reach for anyone with good fitness, determination, and the right preparation. At 5,895 metres, it’s the highest mountain in Africa, but the Machame Route requires no technical climbing experience.

The itinerary is carefully designed to give you the best chance of success. It includes gradual altitude gain, acclimatisation days, and expert support from start to finish. You’ll be led by a UK-based Crux expedition leader and a highly experienced Tanzanian guiding team who have summited the mountain many times before.

Most trekking days involve five to eight hours on the trail, with regular breaks and a steady pace. Your main kit will be carried by porters, and you’ll sleep in high-quality mountain tents with full support in camp. Summit day is long and demanding, but the sense of achievement at the top is unforgettable.

If you’ve completed multi-day hikes before, have a decent base level of fitness, and like the idea of pushing yourself in a team setting, you’ll be in the right place. And if you’re unsure, just reach out — we’re here to help you prepare and succeed.

Food

You’ll be well fed throughout the expedition with hot, energy-rich meals prepared fresh by the mountain kitchen team. All meals are included from the start of the trek through to your return to Moshi.

Each day begins with a hearty breakfast. Expect porridge, eggs, toast, pancakes, sausages, and plenty of tea, coffee, or hot chocolate to get you going. Lunches are either served hot on the trail or packed for early starts, often including rice, pasta, potatoes, or sandwiches with fruit and juice.

Dinner is a three-course meal served in the mess tent. You’ll start with a warming soup, followed by a main of rice, chapati, or spaghetti with vegetables, chicken, or stew, and usually something sweet to finish. Afternoon snacks like popcorn or biscuits are often served too.

We can cater for most dietary requirements if you let us know in advance. Snacks aren't provided, so we recommend bringing a few of your favourites from home. Energy bars, trail mix, and sweets are especially helpful on summit day.

Accomodation

Throughout the expedition, your accommodation is simple, sociable, and designed to suit the environment — from comfortable hotels in Moshi to high mountain camps beneath the stars.

Before the trek, you'll stay in a comfortable hotel in Moshi, with en-suite rooms, breakfast included, and space to relax after your journey. It’s a great base to meet the team, make any last-minute adjustments, and get a good night’s sleep before heading to the trail.

During the climb, you’ll stay in high-quality mountain tents, set up and taken down each day by our support crew. Tents are shared between two people unless you request a private option. A mess tent is used for group meals and briefings, providing a warm, social hub at every camp.

At Barafu Base Camp and beyond, conditions become more rugged. There are no showers or permanent facilities, but our team ensures comfort wherever possible, with warm drinks, hearty food, and friendly support throughout. All group camping gear is included.

Getting There

International flights aren’t included in your booking, but we’ll recommend affordable, efficient options to get you to the right place at the right time. We’ll usually suggest a specific flight — often the one your expedition leader is on — and most of the team will be on the same one unless arriving early.

You’ll fly into Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), ideally arriving on Day 1 (the day before we meet as a group). Day 2 is the official start of the expedition, when your Crux expedition leader will greet you at the hotel, run the initial briefing, and get everything underway.

Once booked, you’ll get access to your Crux portal, which includes flight advice, arrival instructions, and a private forum to coordinate with your teammates. There’s also a WhatsApp group, where you can chat with the leader and others — ideal if you'd like to meet before departure or fly in together.

Extra Nights in Moshi

If you’d like to arrive early or unwind after the climb, we can arrange additional nights at our partner hotel. It’s a great way to explore Moshi or simply take your time before or after the expedition.

Private Room Supplement

Accommodation is typically on a twin-share basis. If you’d prefer your own room, we can arrange this wherever availability allows, especially in Moshi and at the hotel before or after the trek.

FAQ's

Do I need previous climbing experience?

Not at all. Kilimanjaro is a trekking peak. You won’t need to climb with ropes or tackle exposed rock. Instead, you’ll be walking on good trails, with the final summit day on scree and a bit of snow. If you’ve never done anything like this before but you're up for a challenge and willing to learn, you’ll be in good hands.

How fit do I need to be?

You don’t need to be an athlete, but you do need a good base level of fitness and a sense of determination. You’ll be walking for several days in a row, often 5 to 7 hours at a time. If you enjoy a long day in the hills and can carry a light pack, you're well on your way. Most people say this is one of the hardest things they’ve ever done, and also the most rewarding.

What’s the altitude like?

The summit stands at 5,895 metres. That’s serious altitude, but the Machame Route is carefully designed for acclimatisation. We move slowly, allow plenty of time to adjust, and have a full contingency day built into the itinerary to give you the best chance of success. Your guides are experienced in spotting and managing the signs of altitude sickness early, and we never rush.

What support will I have?

You’ll be supported every step of the way by a UK expedition leader and an incredible team of local guides and porters, most of whom have summited Kilimanjaro many times. They know the mountain, the terrain, the risks, and how to keep teams moving and motivated. This is a fully guided, fully supported expedition.

Is it safe?

As with any mountain, there are risks, but this expedition has been designed to manage them well. Our team is trained in high-altitude response and wilderness first aid, and we carry group medical kit and communication devices. We monitor weather and wellbeing carefully and always prioritise safety. Kilimanjaro is a big challenge, but when done properly, it’s an achievable one.

Will I need to carry my own gear?

No. Your main kit will be carried by porters. You’ll only carry a light daypack with water, snacks, and the essentials you need for the day. You’ll be amazed at how much easier the walking feels without a heavy load.

What’s the accommodation like?

In Moshi, you’ll stay in a clean, comfortable hotel with a pool and a great breakfast, ideal for recovery and pre-departure prep. On the mountain, we sleep in spacious expedition tents, with a full camp crew who manage all cooking and logistics.

What if I want to arrive early or stay later?

Easy. We can arrange extra nights at our partner hotel in Moshi if you’d like more time to relax, explore, or adjust to the time zone. You can choose this option during the booking process or just let us know.

Can I join solo?

Absolutely! Most of our participants come alone. You’ll be joining a supportive group of like-minded people, and before you’ve even set foot on the trail, you’ll have had the chance to meet your team and expedition leader at our training / ssocial weekend. Many of our trekkers stay in touch long after the summit, it’s the kind of experience that builds lasting friendships.
