Pre-Departure

In the months leading up to your expedition, we lay the foundations for an unforgettable adventure. From the moment you join us, you’ll be introduced to your expedition leader and provided with all the guidance and support you need to prepare for the journey ahead.

You’ll also be added to a dedicated WhatsApp group chat, allowing you to connect with your teammates, ask questions, build confidence, and start understanding how things will unfold. By the time you land in-country, you’ll already know your team, and we’ll be an expedition running with momentum.

This phase is about getting ready: from packing lists to physical training, setting the stage for a seamless and enriching expedition experience.

Day 1

Arrival in Marrakech

Fly into Marrakech Menara Airport, where you’ll be met by our local team and transferred to your riad or hotel in the heart of the city. Depending on your arrival time, you’ll have the option to explore the medina or relax with mint tea on the rooftop.

Day 2

Transfer to Imlil – Trek to Azib Tamsoult via Tizi Mzik Pass

After breakfast, we drive into the Atlas Mountains and begin our trek. We’ll ascend steadily over the Tizi Mzik Pass and descend into the remote valley of Azib Tamsoult, where we settle in for the night at a mountain gîte or campsite.

Day 3

Azib Tamsoult to Toubkal Refuge (Acclimatisation Day)

This is a demanding day of trekking as we gain significant altitude, crossing the high Aguelzim Pass before descending to the Toubkal Refuge — our base for summit day. The views are spectacular, and the altitude gain makes it an important day for acclimatisation.

Day 4

Summit Mount Toubkal (4167m)

An early start for the final push to the summit — the highest point in North Africa. The route is steep and rocky but achievable with good pacing. From the top, we’re rewarded with incredible panoramic views of the Atlas and beyond. After a moment to soak it in, we descend carefully back to the refuge.

Day 5

Descent to Imlil via Sidi Chamharouch

We descend on a different route via the village shrine of Sidi Chamharouch. This is a gentler day as we return to Imlil and enjoy a well-earned rest in a cosy guesthouse with time to reflect on the journey so far.

Day 6

Return to Marrakech – Optional City Tour

After breakfast, we drive back to Marrakech. The rest of the day is free to explore the city — wander the souks, visit the gardens, or take an optional guided tour (available for a small extra fee). In the evening, we come together for a celebratory meal.

Departure

We’ll transfer you to the airport in time for your flight home — or help arrange onward travel if you’re extending your stay.

Toubkal is a rewarding physical challenge, but one that’s well within reach for anyone with decent fitness, a bit of hillwalking experience, and a positive mindset. At 4,167 metres, it’s the highest peak in North Africa, but the route is non-technical, meaning no climbing experience is required.

The itinerary is designed to give you the best possible chance of success. We build in a steady pace, regular breaks, and a gradual ascent profile to help your body adjust to the altitude. You'll also have a tough but important acclimatisation day before summit day to help you prepare.

Most days involve 4–6 hours of trekking, with longer efforts on the ascent to the refuge and the summit day itself. You’ll carry only a light daypack — our mule team transports your overnight gear — and you’ll be supported throughout by an experienced UK expedition leader and our brilliant Moroccan mountain guides.

If you’ve done a multi-day trek before, or if you’re generally active and excited by the idea of pushing yourself in the mountains, you’ll be in exactly the right place. And if you’re unsure, just ask — we’re here to help you prepare, train, and succeed.

Food

You’ll be well fed throughout the expedition with hearty, energy-rich meals designed to keep you going in the mountains. All meals are included from the start of the trek through to your return to Marrakech, with a mix of local cooking and camp-style meals.

During the trek, meals are prepared by our expedition cook team, often with the help of a muleteer or two, and served in mountain gîtes, campsites, or at the Toubkal Refuge. Expect a blend of traditional Moroccan dishes and familiar staples: tagines, couscous, soups, pasta, flatbreads, stews, omelettes, and seasonal veg. Breakfasts usually include bread, jam, tea, coffee, and eggs.

On summit day, we’ll make sure you’re fuelled up with something warm before the climb, and there’ll be hot food waiting when you return to the refuge.

We can cater for most dietary requirements, just let us know in advance. Snacks aren’t included, so we recommend bringing your favourites from home (energy bars, dried fruit, nuts, chocolate — whatever you like to reach for when the trail gets steep).

Accomodation

Throughout the expedition, your accommodation is simple, sociable, and well-suited to the environment — from traditional riads in Marrakech to rustic mountain guesthouses and remote mountain refuges.

In Marrakech, you'll stay in a comfortable riad or 3-star hotel close to the heart of the medina. It’s the perfect base to unwind after your flight, meet the team, and soak up the energy of the city before heading into the mountains.

During the trek, we’ll stay in a mix of gîtes (basic local guesthouses), mountain refuges, and tents depending on availability and conditions. Rooms are usually shared, with simple beds, blankets or sleeping mats, and shared facilities. At the Toubkal Refuge, we’ll sleep in dormitory-style bunk rooms — a cosy, communal setup that becomes part of the experience.

In some locations, we may camp under the stars, with all group camping gear provided. Meals are served in communal spaces, giving you time to chat, reflect, and refuel together each evening.

You’ll need to bring your own sleeping bag for this expedition — we’ll advise on what rating to go for, and we’re always here to help if you’ve got questions about kit.

Getting There

International flights aren’t included in your booking, but we’ll recommend affordable, efficient options to get you to the right place at the right time. We’ll usually suggest a specific flight—often the one your expedition leader is on—and most of the team will be on the same one unless arriving early.

You’ll fly into Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK), ideally arriving on Day 1. You’ll be met at the airport by our local team and transferred straight to your accommodation in the city.

Depending on the expedition, you may already have met your group at one of our UK training weekends. Either way, once you’re booked, you’ll get access to your Crux Portal, which includes flight advice, arrival instructions, and a private forum to coordinate with your teammates. There’s also a WhatsApp group, where your expedition leader and fellow travellers can chat, plan meet-ups, and even arrange to fly together.

Your expedition includes everything you need for a safe and successful ascent of Toubkal, but there are a couple of ways you can customise your experience if you'd like to add a little extra comfort or time to explore.

Extra Nights in Marrakech

If you’d like to arrive early or stay on after the expedition, we can arrange additional nights at our partner riad or hotel. It’s a great chance to enjoy more of the city’s sights, souks, and street food at your own pace.

Private Room Supplement

Most accommodation on the trip is shared (typically twin rooms or small dorms), but if you’d prefer your own space, we can arrange a private room wherever availability allows — especially in Marrakech and at lower-altitude guesthouses.

FAQ's

Do I need previous climbing experience?

Not at all. Toubkal is a trekking peak, meaning it’s physically demanding but not technical. You won’t be using ropes or climbing gear, and there’s no exposed scrambling. If you’re comfortable walking uphill for several hours and open to a challenge, you’re in the right place. Everything you need to know will be explained and supported by your guides along the way.

How fit do I need to be?

You don’t need to be a mountaineer or endurance athlete — but you do need a good base level of fitness and a sense of determination. You’ll be trekking for multiple days, often for 4–6 hours at a time, with longer days on the ascent to the refuge and summit. If you enjoy hiking in the hills and can carry a small daypack, you’re more than capable of taking this on. The summit day is tough — but achievable — and often described as the most rewarding part of the journey.

What’s the altitude like?

The summit of Toubkal stands at 4,167 metres, so altitude is definitely a factor. The route has been planned with a steady, gradual ascent and includes a full acclimatisation day before summit day to give you the best chance of success. Our team is experienced in spotting signs of altitude sickness early and will guide the group at a pace that prioritises safety and success.

What support will I have?

You’ll be supported every step of the way by a UK expedition leader and our incredible Moroccan mountain guide team. Mules carry your main kit between camps, so you’ll only need to carry a small daypack. This is a fully guided and fully supported adventure — you're never doing this alone.

Is it safe?

As with any mountain expedition, there are risks — but this trip has been designed to manage them. Our guides are trained in mountain safety and wilderness first aid, and the route has been chosen to balance adventure with appropriate acclimatisation. The group carries a medical kit and emergency communication equipment, and decisions are always made with welfare as the top priority.

Will I need to carry my own gear?

No — your main expedition kit will be carried by mules. You’ll just carry a light daypack with water, layers, snacks, and a few essentials. It makes a big difference to your energy levels and allows you to really enjoy the journey.

What’s the accommodation like?

In Marrakech, you’ll stay in a welcoming riad or hotel near the heart of the city. On the trek, we stay in a mix of mountain gîtes, refuges, and tents. Accommodation is simple but sociable, with great views and hot meals. At the refuge, we stay in shared dormitories, and in some locations we may camp — all group equipment is provided.

What if I want to arrive early or stay later?

No problem — we can arrange extra nights in our partner riad in Marrakech if you'd like more time to explore, recover, or adjust to the time zone. Just let us know when you book and we’ll make it happen.

Can I join solo?

Absolutely. Most of our participants do. Whether you’re coming on your own or with a friend, you’ll be joining a welcoming group of like-minded adventurers. And by the time you reach the summit, chances are you’ll have formed a bond that lasts long after the trip is over.
